Quantum Design, Oxford Instruments Sign Important Agreement

  • Joint Technical Development for Next Generation of Material Characterization Instruments

San Diego, November 2, 2001 - Ronald E. Sager, Ph.D., founder and CEO of Quantum Design (QD), and Dr. Jim Hutchins, Sales Director of Oxford Instruments superconductivity (OIS), a division of Oxford Instruments PLC based in Oxford, UK, today announced that a strategic alliance agreement has been signed between QD and OIS. The agreement will allow the companies - both experts in specialized laboratory instrumentation - to collaborate on product development of measurement systems designed for the materials characterization market.

The specific products identified for joint development between OIS and QD initially include:

  • New high-field instruments for materials characterization based on OIS' superconducting magnet technology
  • Incorporation of OIS' dilution refrigerator technology into QD's Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS) product line
  • OIS supply of 14 T magnets to QD for their 14 T PPMS product

Established in 1982, Quantum Design manufactures their MPMS (Magnetic Properties Measurement System) and PPMS (Physical Properties Measurement System) lines, which have become the industry standard for researchers in the fields of physics, materials science, and chemistry. With the signing of this agreement, Dr. Sager says, "the scientific community will benefit from the expertise of both companies coming together to use their unique creative talents to drive advances in the development of scientific instrumentation used for physical measurement in critical areas of advanced materials."

Oxford Instruments, since its founding in 1959, has been at the forefront of the development of scientific instrumentation. OIS is a major international supplier of advanced instrumentation and enabling superconducting magnets, and cryogenic technology used in the areas of physical and biochemical scientific research.

Dr. Jim Hutchins said, "we are delighted with this multi-million dollar agreement. We believe that this will offer the scientific research community a strong technology profile that will help advance the capability of physical property measurements in a way that so far has been unavailable. This capability will help advance research in the important fields of nanotechnology, quantum computing and related application areas."
