Management Team – Quantum Design International

Jerry Daviess, Executive Director

President of Quantum Design (QD) from 1996 to 2012, Jerry Daviess oversaw the company's business growth from $7M to over $150M. Mr. Daviess joined QD in 1995 as the Director of Sales and Marketing and is largely responsible for spearheading QD's international expansion. This included the incorporation of offices in China, India and Brazil. In this capacity, Jerry Daviess has established himself as both an excellent strategist for international business growth and as an operational manager in each of the company's foreign offices. Mr. Daviess' prior experience includes 8 years with GE Medical Systems (now GE Healthcare) in a variety of sales and marketing positions, and 5 years with Toshiba America Medical Systems as the director of the CT Business Unit. Mr. Daviess holds an MBA from Marquette University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Bacteriology and Public Health from Washington State University. In 2014, Jerry Daviess was named Chief Executive Officer of Quantum Design International, and in 2023 became Executive Director.

 

Greg DeGeller, Chief Executive Officer

Greg DeGeller joined Quantum Design in 2001 after 22 years with Boeing Company. His last position at Boeing was as Director of Industrial Engineering at the Long Beach facility. Using his extensive experience in manufacturing and quality control processes, as Chief Operating Officer he directed the reorganization of QD's production procedures to keep pace with the rapid growth of annual sales during the last several years. In 2012, Mr. DeGeller became President of Quantum Design. Mr. DeGeller then became Chief Executive Officer of Quantum Design International in 2023. He has a BA in Business Administration from Washington State University and an MBA from the University of Phoenix.

 

Stefano Spagna, Ph.D., Vice President of Strategy and Innovation

Stefano Spagna earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science in 1995 from the University of California San Diego. Shortly after, he joined Quantum Design as a Research Physicist and became its Chief Technical Officer in 2008. In 2015, Stefano spearheaded Quantum Design's undergraduate physics laboratory initiative which includes online resources for students and educators. An active scientific researcher and published author, in 2019, Stefano joined the editorial board of Physical Review Applied, a leading scientific publication published by the American Physical Society. A vocal advocate of helium conservation, Stefano helped launch July 10th as "Helium Conservation Day," aimed at increasing awareness for helium conservation around the world. In 2022, Stefano was named Vice President of Strategy and Innovation of Quantum Design International.

 

Karen De Los Reyes, Chief Financial Officer

Karen De Los Reyes has led the accounting team at Quantum Design since 2014. During this time, Karen has modernized the company's business processes including the implementation of a new Enterprise Resource Planning system. In 2020, Karen added Information Technology to her responsibilities and assisted in making remote working achievable at QD. Prior to joining QD, Karen worked for a variety of privately and publicly held high-tech engineering and manufacturing companies primarily in financial planning and analysis. Karen has an MBA from Northeastern University, and a BS in Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting from California State University, Northridge. In 2022, Karen De Los Reyes was named Chief Financial Officer of Quantum Design International.

 

Aashish Chourey, Ph.D., Director of Business Development

Aashish Chourey joined Quantum Design in 2010. Previous to joining Quantum Design, Dr. Chourey spent 18 years as a sales lead in the superconducting magnet system industry. His most recent position was Sales and Marketing Director at American Magnetics, Inc., where he was responsible for developing their worldwide distribution network. He played an active role in the evolution of the MAxes vector field magnet systems for research in Spintronics, as well as initializing an R&D 100 award-winning DOE program for Thermo Magnetic Processing in collaboration with the Material Science Group at ORNL, the EATON Corporation and the Ajax TOCCO Corporation. Dr. Chourey has a background in developing sales teams for a wide range of scientific and analytical instrumentation, and has a Ph.D. in Physics from Mumbai University in the area of High Tc superconducting thin films.

 

Doug Bird, Director of International Technical Support

Doug Bird joined Quantum Design's engineering group in 2005. Mr. Bird led the launch of the PPMS VersaLab and PPMS EverCool-II option. To support QD's continued growth, in 2012, he moved to the role of US Customer Service Manager, and then Director of International Technical Support in 2019. Mr. Bird has a BS in Physics from the University of California, San Diego and a MS in Physics from San Diego State University.

 

Barak Green, Director of Marketing and Communications

Barak Green joined Quantum Design in 2010. Prior to joining Quantum Design, Mr. Green was the Communications Manager for the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). During his tenure at GIA, Barak Green was instrumental in development of their new diamond cut grading system, including its implementation in their worldwide network of grading laboratories and in the global diamond industry. Since joining Quantum Design USA, Mr. Green has led their marketing efforts, including website re-design, public relations, brochures and advertising. In 2013, Mr. Green's marketing responsibilities were expanded to include the global network of Quantum Design International, and in 2023 Mr. Green became Director of Marketing and Communications. Barak Green has a Master's Degree in Anthropology from UCSD.

Martin Kugler, Ph.D., President

Martin Kugler joined Quantum Design's engineering group in 2005 after earning his Ph.D. in low temperature physics at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Dr. Kugler led the launch of the award-winning MPMS SQUID VSM (now the MPMS 3) into production and managed the platform's option development. In 2010, the increasing rate of innovation at Quantum Design led Dr. Kugler to take on the role of Manager of System Engineering, where he streamlined and improved the quality of Quantum Design's new product introductions. In 2012, Dr. Kugler became Chief Operating Officer. He took that leadership as Quantum Design relocated to a new 120,000 sq. ft. campus. He successfully implemented larger-scale manufacturing operations yielding a continuous revenue growth. In 2023, he became President of Quantum Design, Inc.

William Neils, Ph.D., Chief Technology Officer

William Neils earned his Ph.D. in Physics in 2002 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. William joined Quantum Design in January 2005 as part of the research and development group. He helped to develop the dilution refrigerator temperature option and the PPMS DynaCool platform among other products. In mid-2015, William was asked to lead a separate, focused development group at Quantum Design called Q-Works. As part of this group, he helped conceive and develop the OptiCool magneto-optical cryostat platform introduced by Quantum Design in 2018. In December 2022, William Neils became the Chief Technology Officer of Quantum Design, Inc.

 

Bret Davis, Chief Operating Officer

Bret Davis joined Quantum Design's Final Test team in 2000 after earning a BS in Physics from San Diego State University (SDSU). Mr. Davis quickly became attracted to supporting and optimizing the complexity of Quantum Design's manufacturing processes. While working on his MS degree in Physics from SDSU, he developed his expertise in Lean Manufacturing, supervised the manufacturing engineering team, and took over leadership of the production department. In 2018, Mr. Davis became Director of Manufacturing Operations, playing a key role in implementing a new ERP system and increasing Quantum Design's output by 40% over his tenure. In 2023, he took the role of Chief Operating Officer.
